MANILACON

The club recently concluded an exciting and fun-filled bonanza of scale modeling galore. An never-before well organized activity that combined a contest, a make and take, an exhibit and a workshop put altogether under one roof. It was an event that not many clubs in the Philippines and in other countries was able to do with so limited resources and manpower. As IPMS Manila President, Dr. Eric Valera said, "the club is my strength".

The Ateneo Grade School Hobby Craft Club put together their works as contest entries and while at it, joined the Make-and-Take activity spearheaded by the Bankee Trading "Gundam Caravan". Click to continue...

The Tank Story

An inauguration at the

Armed Forces of the Philippines Museum

by Jose Custodio

Last November 25, 2008, the AFP Museum in cooperation with IPMS Manila launched a special exhibit entitled the Tank Story. The exhibit traces the development of the tank from World War I up to the present by using scale models of tanks as its visual tool. This is one of those rare occasions that commercially available scale models have been used as a historical educational tool. This brings the hobby a full circle since decades ago scale models had indeed been used as instructional tools by the military and they still do up to the present.

What make's a 1/72 Tank...

a Champion

by Rey Anipan

-- model pics to follow --

I was once asked why my 1/72 scale armor builds make it to the top three slots whenever we have competitions and wanted to know how do I do it. I must admit there is nothing special about my builds. They're all out of the box. No after market parts, no modifications. Nothing. Also add the fact that I'm color blind.

I started building 1/72 scale armor late 2005. I tried that scale due to the kits low price and small footprint, coupled with ease of build and intricate detail in such a small scale. The first 1/72 scale kit I built was a DML T-34 1941. Quickly followed by a German 2A6 MBT and a Bradley, then a Mid and Late Tiger 1 also from DML. It was a building frenzy of 1/72 kits since at that time I was still new to the hobby. Every time I finished a kit, I make it a point to bring it to the clubs monthly meeting so other Click to continue...

End-of-the-Year Presidential Address

by: Dr. Eric Valera

President, IPMS Manila, Philippines

HIGH FIVE IPMS-Manila!  Pardon the overused exclamation but we’ve actually revered our 5th year as the zenith of our club’s young history.

2008 will always be remembered for winning the back-to-back Regional COY and 2007 IPMS-USA National COY. That inspiring performance defined a winning formula worthy of emulation this year. Honestly we’ve somehow approximated that year and even tried to improve on it. This is best exemplified by a string of proudly successful activities climaxed by the National Open “Manilacon” last November 29-30, 2008.

Even without the knowledge of winning the NCOY, the club has affirmed to improve in every facet from front-office administration of its officers to individual modeling skills of its members. IPMS-Manila has evolved from a small group of hobbyists to a top-class modeling institution in the country. From occasional group builds, the club now offers monthly seminars with individualized programs that will enrich each member’s craftsmanship.  The community exhibits have advanced into national contests with make-and takes, workshop and demonstrations all designed to heighten the public’s awareness to the hobby. The commitment to encourage the youth to embrace the hobby not only continues with our partnership with the Ateneo Grade School Hobbycraft but also nears extension to another premiere school in La Salle Greenhills. Finally the obligation to give back to the community was punctuated with the submission of the dioramas commissioned by the Veterans Foundation of the Philippines and the supported by the Armed Forces of the Philippines.

I have always maintained that the club’s greatest asset is its highly committed and enthusiastic members.  The club may have enjoyed its finest financial status yet but every member without exception delivered their peak performances to date! As I reviewed my little president’s diary, I browsed upon the countless participations and intangible contributions that each member has poured in over the last months.

Modesty aside, the best is yet to come. Sounds hectic?  Wait till next year!

Building Trumpeter's

USS San Francisco

CA-38 Cruiser

by Noel Carpio

Dang I love building ships! From the days of my naval officers' training until today, I just can't stop building them...big or small. Here comes another beauty from Trumpeter. The 1/350 scale USS San Francisco Cruiser.  The model came in its usual light gray colored plastic injected parts.  The fits was very nice and there were little challenges in the assembly that a beginner modeler can definitely overcome.  I built this World War II cruiser with the basic Gold Medal Models Photo-etched parts.  The paint scheme I chose was pre-war which was her colors before the Pearl Harbor attack.

This ship is a good Philippine war subject.  The USS San Francisco participated in the island-to-island clean-up of the Allied Forces towards the end of the Pacific War.  The USS San Francisco was the US cruiser that got many direct hits from invading Japanese planes and salvos from enemy ships. She held on until the end of the war.

If you are a beginner modeler who wants to build a good ship model, I would recommend this for your first project. Build it out-of-the-box or with after market parts, I bet it will be a very educational build for you!
